I’ve always loved old games magazines, especially those from before the advent of the polygon in the 90s, because 2D games, produced by a team of just a few people, carry infinitely more charm than the big budget titles of today.
Thanks to the limits of technology at the time, 90% of advertising and covers for games featured some form of artwork, with screenshots of the actual game tucked away in the corner (and those screenshots were actually SHOTS OF THE SCREEN. PHOTOS of the screen. There was no such thing as digital capture back then). It could be argued that this was primarily to dupe you into thinking you were getting something better than you really were. I think it was more so you’d have some idea what the collections of MASSIVE pixels on screen were meant to represent. Yeah….games back then were real audience participation affairs. Graphics were essentially cue-cards for your brain. They give you the basics and you come up with the rest on your own.
Anyway; one of the magazines in my collection in the 90s – when I was an innocent and impressionable teen – was a 1987 Commodore periodical. I found it recently, and, for some inexplicable reason, it just seems to fall open on the page with this advertisement on it. It’s, of course, a mystery as to why…..
*ahem*
I never played the game Athena ( [link] ), but I did a bit of research after I noticed the SNK logo. Turns out the very western illustration was used to peddle the title beyond Japan’s shores because, at the time, the Manga/Anime style was avoided like the plague by advertisers.
Had to do my own take on the focus of that….memorable picture.
& back when a game having story meant that it came with a booklet loaded with back-story and maybe some bits of narrative to read at specific points in the game.
Wow! A fanart of old-school Athena, and her western art even! Very nice to see this on DA, and you did a brilliant job. As a long time fan of the game, I think you! I also love old gaming mags, I still have my first magazine with me. I always loved to see the official character art for all those little sprites.
Ah, memories. I was really attracted the covers for games that blatantly used photos from movies (like Contra using Predator and Aliens as a base, or metal gear using The Terminator as a base). It always made me imagine that incredibly detailed art (and the movies they ripped off) in the game, even though I was just looking at some 8-bit sprites.
Still is, though mostly outside of the vg realm nowadays. Check out what they did to the covers of Spice And Wolf novels.
Great take on the game art, though.
