I think the only REAL reason why i like Halo is because I was brought up playing it, so it's harder for me to dismiss it than some-one who was brought up playing legendary games for the PC, Nintendo 64, PS1, etc~
That said, I did enjoy the Halo series, partly because I have a weakness for Corps-Wank and partly because what you call "cliche" many others call, "Staples." I mean when the magitech future weapons are energy-based, do you call *that* a tawdry cliche? Of course not.
That said, it was still quite generic and when compared in both technical design (that's "how purty it played") and gameplay innovation to contemporary Tribes 2 Halo was inferior.
But fundamentally PC gaming has slowly but surely been hedged out of the big-budget games business because it's just so much EASIER to stick with samey shooters on unchanging hardware than deal with the filthy unwashed PC gamers who are all guilty of piracy until proven innocent.
And it's not like I really play shooters much anymore anyway.
