More Old Battle Bunnies Pages by jollyjack More Old Battle Bunnies Pages by jollyjack
The original pages 5 to 10 of Battle Bunnies.
This was as far as I got with the project back in 2008, and it was at this time that I acquired a Cintiq and started doing everything digitally, making these the last comic pages I drew with pencil and ink.

I made a point of not looking at these pages again until I had finished the new ones, simply so I didn’t make the task feel like a chore. No one enjoys having to re-do work, but I just couldn’t pick up where I left off 4 years ago, the difference in linework and character design (Beardy cat got fat!) was simply too great.

That said; there are a few angles and character positioning that I wish I had re-used.

There were a number of changes made to the narrative and dialogue for this scene, chief of which is the “hidden blade” gimmick. It’s a “bad girl” cliché that’s still there, but I felt the original was too aggressive for the slightly flirtatious air I wanted to establish between Connie and Varanasi. So, rather than have Connie produce a BIG blade from….somewhere, and sweep it in Varanasi’s direction, she simply produces a more manageable knife and offers it to an amused, rather than shocked, Rajlander, which is enough to make her point.

There's more scenery in the old one... But it's not so needed. The new one is simply better. Also, the fact that she leans on top of a table in the old one makes no sense. I like it better that she sits with them all in the sauna... And it's a very good move to have removed that silly towel.

Anyway, You've only improved with time. Good go, Jack. Can't wait to see more pages. It's a thrilling story.

seriously...where did she hide the blade???
spacegoblin Featured By Owner Nov 1, 2012
Oh my :) Very good-I'll have to pick this up at next Demoncon (hopefully?) -the new version that is (although a special edition with the old pages rolled in as a bonus feature would be pretty sweet ;)).

It might be a while before we see a hardcopy version :D

Awe shucks, Mr Jack. Ah well-something to look forward to :) Keep up the good work!

An interesting comparison. I might just have to assemble the new pages in this same vertical format and set them side by side.

Ha! Their FACES! I loved her calm-pleasant-open expression as she knifed it.
The dude's 'mildly perturbed' as she did so and the guy behind him's 'WTF?!' was lolly.

I love it! It is coming along fantastic!

The dialogue is /much/ better in the new version. Excellent improvment sir.
MacKenzieX Featured By Owner Oct 30, 2012
I dunno. I love the comic, but there's just something I like about the subtle reminder that taking your eyes off her is not a good idea. Even if you think she's unarmed, or more especially when you think she's unarmed. And I really, really love the last panel here.
katayamma Featured By Owner Oct 29, 2012
Oh, I do like her as well. =^_^=

I think you're right about the aggression in this version. I did rather enjoy the more playful tone of the rework, because with this version, she has a slightly threatening demeanor to her, where as the new one has Constance with a confident air but she makes it clear she'll do the job.

that cat on the last: so much personality

I like the dialogue in the original for its tension. The new dialogue doesn't feel right for the situation. Having said that, the art work shows you are getting even better.

I like the direction you took with the newer version. As you said, it's more flirtatious and in the spirit of things than what you had before... which looks good, but feels a bit too aggressive. Also, good inspiration! I'm hoping to start a webcomic soon, just have to get the story settled first.

oh, i like her too... :nosebleed:

The scene in your new work also makes a lot more sense. They're inside a sauna, which explains why they're all expected to come scantily clad and why it's a good meeting place (public place where you have to be nude). That wasn't made clear in the original. That combined with the fact she came sitting on a table in submissive pose, the original makes the whole scene come off as a contrived cheesecake scene.

I also like the new one better because it makes the bunny girl come off as professional. Like you said, she feels more savage here. She rubs it in their faces that she could have killed them all. In the new, she actually distracts from this fact by flirting with her clients, which is the classy and smarter thing to do. Highlighting any betrayal your client's trust is a bad idea, regardless of intentions. The new battle bunny comes off as a bad girl who's flirtatious yet professional. She's underhanded and deadly, but to the extent of her profession as a mercenary.

It makes the character more deep and interesting than "I'm a flirty bad girl who kills people whenever I please."
leviadragon99 Featured By Owner Oct 29, 2012
Mm, it's interesting to note the differences and the simularities... personally I think this version still holds up, but the change to the knife reveal does make the newer version less cliche'd that way and portrays her and Varanasi more realistically as characters.

I like these panels much more :)

I like the change with the hidden blade bit. It tends to get overplayed in the genre, so seeing a more subtle version is a bit refreshing. I also rather like the fact "beardy cat" is a bit overweight... It gives him character and makes him stand out more. Additinoally, it helps dilute the "world of steel abs and rippling muscle" vibe the rest of the Rajlanders give off. ;p
Amarantha-Thea Featured By Owner Oct 28, 2012  Hobbyist General Artist
is it bad that i know at least one area she could have the knife based on how she held her hand.
i don't know if it's just from experience but i know that I don't hold towels like that unless i'm holding something in my hand at the same time....

o.o..dam...move over Jessica Rabbit...I want this bunny

XD love the story behind it ^^

i agree, there is always room to hide a knife.

The previous pages looked very similar..
these, instead, are completely different.. that's very interesting!
You kept the same dialog and story, but re-imagine all the scene, even changed the background (for a less detailed but more apropriate for a nudist meeting.)

very nice =]

I like both of them, but I like the lady's body design in the newer comic, it's less "sexy" and more "sleek."

I think she is quite a dangerous and capable woman, yet one who distinctly takes care of herself. From her long flowing hair to her perfectly even toes (yes those feet are VERY well drawn! A rarity in most comics!) I like this newer one best because one doesn't always have to point out how dangerous a character is, sometimes making people underestimate you is a far more powerful tool than them learning not to mess with you! Albeit this one seems much less of a snooty (insert curse word for the bunny in Sequential Art here!) variety! I like her, granted I'd never be able to trust her without some kind of ironclad contract... But personally I find this particular atmosphere and the greater detail in action here to be much more welcome than the past one.

I actually like the newer one you dont reveal how dangerous Connie is but you have that subtle feeling that she could handle herself. Though the newer panels are more lighthearted I got a bit of a "darker" undertone from their conversation vs a "sinister" one. Also Varanasi is a bit more "likeable" in the new panels in these ones he just seems like background. In here he seems a little flat I mean he has three expressions, but the expressions arent all that different besides, im suprised and his normal glances. True this is the same with the new Varanasi one suprised, sir smiles alot, and mr ok with it but his consistent smile is more appealing and provides a more "commanding" aura about him plus the "angles" are a bit more effective especially with him having more close ups. The new hair style also works wonders though her eyes are larger than her older counterpart I get a sort of "hollow" feel, as if she lost what "niceties" she had. Overall I have to say its a pretty good improvement and feels less cluttered, nothing really lost, but a lot gained.

Your vagina is not a purse. Well some women learn and others don't. Others end up in the ER. True story.
