My stab at illustrating the script DC provided for their talent search: www.dccomics.com/node/305151

This was done purely for fun. I'm not looking to land a gig working on a big-name comic. I'd much rather focus on my own projects than work on existing IPs.
Besides, there have got to be more talented artists out there whose style would better fit the DCU than mine. I honestly don’t think I could work fast enough for them, anyway!
:D

There has been quite a bit of internet chatter about the script DC chose for this, mainly in regards to the oversexualization of Harley Quinn (which I can’t really argue with) and how the script requires her to be depicted in a bath.
Lots of hysterical people criticising DC for “requesting her being drawn naked”.
I’d planned out my page before I’d read any of these comments. She has to be in a bath, so that she’s naked is pretty much a given, but it had never occurred to me that Harley should be rendered in any kind of pseudo-soft-core pose. That’s just not in key with the character that I know.
If you read the script and thought that was what was required, that says more about you than it does DC.

It reads:

PANEL 4
Harley sitting naked in a bathtub with toasters, blow dryers, blenders, appliances all dangling above the bathtub and she has a cord that will release them all. We are watching the moment before the inevitable death. Her expression is one of “oh well, guess that’s it for me” and she has resigned herself to the moment that is going to happen.

Not:

We are witnessing all this from a birds eye view. Suds and steam obscure the nipples but not the full rack. Her free arm is curled just under her boobs, raising them slightly out of the water and at the same time squeezing them together gently.
A rubber duck floats over her snatch. It looks happy.

If each panel of a comic tells a story, this one is meant to relay that the apparently suicidal Quinn is about to fry herself….and she’s going to be thorough about it. There’s no reason for nudity to be any kind of hang-up or focus at all, hence its complete absence from my interpretation.

Love the little ducky on the side. It just sets off the whole thing I think.

Also the link is dead, but the Internet Archive has it cached at web.archive.org/web/2013091403….

the perspective work and detail in these is great, and full of personality.
However, with DC's request it was never the sexualisation aspect that bothered me, it was the fact they were kinda making a joke about somebody attempting suicide. It just felt really, really low to me.

Oh Harley.. Everything about her makes me want to protect her somehow. She is by far my favourite DC character and I love what you did with her here. This invokes so much.

About the script.. There will Always be someone, who can find something in anything to outrage at, won't there? It's really sad, because it seems this is the most emotion and passion these people get out of life..

On the other hand, there will always be people on the other end of the spectrum as well ^^

well done, and well said. I agree with you, and it just plain makes sense. I like your interpretation far better anyway. I will admit, though, I didn't realize that this was Harley until I read the description. you art style is significantly different. but yes, it was just for fun anyway.

This is a great set! I still can't bring myself to like the new outfit, though. Impractical and just...well...it doesn't say "Harlequin" to me at all. It's not even a little clown-themed!

Yes you don't have to draw Harley in the bath naked as everyone is twisting their panties about. You've shown how it can be done, however the implication of turning suicide into some sort of joke, or making it just to add some sort of "drama" I feel is far more sinister, and lazy on script writers parts.

I had also drawn one, but i wasn't sure if i was allowed to post it until after the contest. But i seem to be seeing people all over the place posting them, so maybe i'll just not care, and throw mine up on the net as well...

Well it really looks great. We had a short lesson on how to use Citiqs in the Kubert school, but none of us had enough money to buy one of our own. So is it best for digital inks or is it good for coloring as well?

Both, though running a pen/stylus over glass rather than paper takes a little getting used to.

As with any equipment: it's only worth investing in if you're sure it'll pay for itself over time.
You can get by without one!

I'm getting bored of saying this, but well said!

Its always fascinating to me how people are ready to rail off their hinges at perceived slights, especially myself.  Usually when I'm at my most indignant, I will be able to look back as soon as I have a moment to think and find out I was completely full of shit!

Really good perspective work on panel 4 btw!

VERY good work.  The bottom panel is fantastic, but you've added character to all of them on top of solid style.  I prefer the last simply because the complexity of the perspective and objects around her, as well as her expression and construction, are the best.  First panel she's a bit cartoony, but the page itself is great.

Not to mention the fact that all the panels combined seem to paint a picture of abject failure at committing suicide.  My guess...in the last panel the rope develops a knot and get stuck.  Nothing falls.

Nicely done! Even though I think Harley's new 52 costume is utterly ridiculous, I really like that you didn't overly sexualize her-- no pointless but shots, no boobs front and center, and no teasing nudity in the fourth panel. Just consistent, solid storytelling

(And your parody description of panel four is sadly/hilariously the kind of thing you see all the time in comics).

Great work :)

Better watch it.  Mark Hamill just went in 'for fun' for the Joker without any expectations of actually getting the job for Batman : The Animated Series.

Now he IS the voice of the Joker, and not many feel it right if he ever gets replaced. =P

Panel 5: She cuts the cord and everything falls and just before they hit the water, they come unplugged, bonking her on the head.

At least that is the way it seems to be going for her here.  Interesting take on this.  I heard about this DC project earlier and still think it odd.
