Raglan Castle 08 by jollyjack Raglan Castle 08 by jollyjack
I've dubbed Raglan Castle as "The Accidental Castle", as I stumbed upon it by pure chance. I was actually trying to get to Monmouth Castle, which is about 6 miles to the East. That Monmouth is a total maelstrom of roads from which unwary travellers seem to get spat out in random directions, and that pretty much every road sign in Wales is half covered by vegetation, are the only reason I found it. And thank god I did! It's a mighty impressive place.
It was used as a fortress right up until the end of the English Civil War, during which it was a Royalist headquarters. When Parlementarian forces finally captured it, they razed it so it could never be used again.

This is a beautiful picture. It reminds of the time I ws in Ireland with my wife and we came upon the ruin of a15th century abbey (I think we were in Carlingford and it was raining) and we explored it with no one else around. Thank you for sharing this

As an American recently who recently visited England, I'll have you know I went around most of the time saying, "Yep, that's older than my country."

I find it a real adventure when you find old and abandon pieces of the past like this.

I love castles, ive always wondered how one would look just after it was built.

Imagine seeing a freshly constructed castle, before the weather has time to work on it.
