I was surprised to learn that there are more roads WITHIN the rock of Gibraltar than there are across and around it.
During the Second World War, a huge garrison was constructed to protect the RAF base and runway, which was vital to the North Africa campaigns and later; the assault on Italy.
Soldiers would spend 6 days out of 7 in the miles and miles of tunnels, usually working with the engineers to further extend the secret installation.
Throughout the war, the Germans had no idea the place existed, nor were they aware of just how many troops were stationed there.

I guess that gave the soldiers living in the tunnels an advantage. You always have the advantage when you know your surroundings.
