The Rosetta stone was found by the French in Egypt during the Napolionics.....aaaand we pinched it from them.

It's one of those legendary artifacts that makes the heart of a history-nerd like me skip a beat when you first lay eyes on the thing.
SCREW the Lost Ark or the Holy Grail, this thing is the real deal.
I read about it years and years ago. This is the first time I ever saw it with my own eyes.

Photo taken at The British Museum.

It must have been quite a moment when you did first lay eyes on it. :D

A truly magnificent shot of the stone, if I may say so.

i know that it has multiple languages on it and that it was the basis for modern translation and linguistic sciences but what does it actually say on the stone?

What's the point in being grown up, if you can't be childish sometimes?

I would love to see that too. In my opinion the three greatest things that Humanity has ever created (not discovered, like fire) are Language, Written Language, and the Postit Note.

This one kind of gets all three across. Only slighty less temporary than postits. :)

Congrats on seeing the Stone finally! I had the same reaction: it was so powerful and impacting to see such an important artifact! It looks pretty uncrowded...was it a slow day at the museum? Ha ha, when I was there, I had to fight to get to the front!
