An enjoyable enough flick that was actually free of quite a few of the usual Burton hallmarks (not a black and white stripe in sight!), but it felt more of a tribute than it should have to the long forgotten series on which it was based.
There are a few real "What the?" moments near the end which are no doubt nods to the source material, of which Burton and Depp are huge fans, but which are completely lost on the rest of us.
(Was lycanthropy mentioned earlier in the film? If it was; I missed it! - That's no spoiler BTW. It has NO relevance to the rest of the film which is what makes its inclusion so baffling.)

It's also the first film in which Eva Green actually looks like the bombshell everyone's been claiming her to be since Casino Royale.

It was pretty good. Great cast, nice soundtrack, Alice Cooper...

Could have done with another ten minutes, I think. The ending felt awfully rushed.
And I've never seen a character, let alone the important love interest, turn from fairly interesting to flat in such a way Victoria did! What gives!?

I first saw the trailer for this movie when I went to watch "The Avengers".
Already I find it more imaginative and clever than "Twilight".

Long-forgotten by whom?

I kind of wish I had forgotten it. Maybe seeing the trailer wouldn't have hurt my head so much.

It seems to me that when Depp plays an original character, the films do great at the box office. It's when he does his take on an established character that the box flounders.

I just watched it today <3 I really loved it ^_^ I was excited to see Helena as well. Unfortunately I have never seen the show it was based off of but I've never been a fan of soap operas. Yeah the werewolf thing surprised me too XD but I'm sure it turned up somewhere in the original show and was just a bonus that original watchers would have guessed early, since I didn't see any hints about it (but then again I'm kinda slow so I wouldn't have noticed).

Odds are, the exposition for the werewolf reveal was probably set up in the original cut, so maybe I should wait for the "Director's Cut" release on DVD/Blu to get it put back in. More than one movie recently has made me say "There was more to that scene... what got cut?"

My late cousin loved this show when he grew up. While I barely saw the original on Sci-Fi and only remember the remake that didn't last one season, after seeing the trailers, I'm not really impressed by this imo. I think I'd rather look into the original show if possible. Movie wise, I went to see Avengers again.

Third time.

Yup.

Still awesome. ^_^

I just saw it earlier today, and kept an eye out for the werewolf reference. It didn't make sense until Caroline made her furry debut and then it clicked. David cracks early on in the movie "Caroline touches herself. She makes sounds like a dog." or something close to that. And then we see why. Then Angelique explains how Caroline got that way.

I grew up with the revamped version from the early 90's and it got cancelled before the werewolf parts were introduced. I only saw a handful of episodes of the original series when I was older and none of them had any mention of them. I didn't know werewolves were in the plot until I was talking to my husband's mother about the movie and she says "Oh sweetie, it's all vampires, witches, time travel AND werewolves".
I took my mom to see it today and she's seen ALL of the original series and remembers werewolves but is unsure if Caroline was ever one at all; of course it's not like it's hard to look up. It was funny nonetheless; Chloe was great.
I was looking forward to the cameos of the original actors. Too bad they couldn't work in a quick memorial for Jonathan Frid like they did for Dan Curtis.

The lycanthropy is supposed to be another curse in the family, but on Baranbus's brother. It's been awhile since I've seen the show.

I'm just glad to see Burton going back to appealing to niche audiences after Alice in Wonderland, which was too much like all the other big money-making epic fantasy movies for my taste.

Not sure whether I'll be able to see this in theaters, but I'm for sure going to get it on DVD.

Thanks for the review.
I generally put way more regard in the opinions of Real People™ than professional reviewers.
I do find it ironic that of all the folks I talk to, it seems to be the self-proclaimed diehard fans of the old series who pan the film for NOT being truer to the source, and that Tim and Johnny played if for laughs instead of the Deadly Serious piece of Small Screen Gravitas that they claim it was.
I've seen the series on DVD ad Netflix. I have NO idea what they're talking about.

? Scared? of Iron Man dying? Not Particularly. He is a superhero. And a Marvel superhero at that. They never die.... If he was DC, he would die, but then be mystically resurrected somehow.

However, nice little dramatic display he put on. trying to be a true hero with self sacrifice and all that.

It was pretty funny. The final direction wasn't up to snuff, but I think it made a fine summer movie.

I don't know if there's a reference specifically, but werewolves are mentioned several times. And yes, it's in the source. It's supposed to come out of left field at you.

Who cares if it makes as much money as The Avengers? Is your enjoyment of a movie proportionate to its box office receipts?
