F**k you, Disney. F**k you.

www.joystiq.com/2013/04/03/dis…

If you are not angered by this news, you're obviously a very young gamer and probably (rightly) see LucasArts as nothing more than a mediocre-Star-Wars-title-discharging-sewer-pipe.

Disney bought LucasFilm because of the Star Wars cash-cow, but the number of classic IPs produced by LucasArts throughout the 90s makes the descision to close it rather than attempt to return to the studio to its glory days pretty staggering.
I actually see way more potential in LucasArts IPs than Star Wars.....but then, so would anyone with even the most stunted of creative minds.

Disney obviously still own all the properties, but the LucasArts brand is gone, and it's the end of an era, even if they start picking at the corpse for ideas to ruin.

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Secret of Monkey Island, anyone?

  • Watching: The blurry haze before my eyes
  • Playing: Sick

Honestly... anything that tears Lucas from Star Wars is a good thing. The first three movies were great but somebody needed to seriously smack him for changing Wookies to Ewoks. I am not even going to discuss Jar-Jar, a character whose complete absence would improve any movie he is in... Here is hoping that Disney pulls a Roger Rabbit and not a Black Cauldron here.

Well seeing as Disney owns all the creative properties now they can just have their own studio develop more star wars shit or give development to a 3rd party studio that I guess one can say has a reputation for developing really high quality products.

Whereas this totally sucks for the people employed by LucasArts, their demise actually wasn't too far ahead without disney's closing. There were supposedly some management problems within the company that actually had nothing to do with Disney. It's still awful and know what it feels like to be canned because of either a dying project or a dying company. It's awful and nerve wrecking.

For those of you who are sad about SW:1313, another company with higher credibility is said to pick it up - don't know who. Also, I think it's too early to say Disney is going to ruin all IPs. Honestly, I'm a bit curious about it.

Lastly, we should come to the realization that Disney is a large company and most of all, a large business. Businesses are about money and thus, they had to protect their assets even if it means axing another company.

That's a good question, as far as in house development goes possibly Rogue Squadron which was 15 years ago, never played it so for me Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight, which was 16 years ago, unless you want to count Pandemics Mercenaries Playground of Destruction which was 8 years ago and didn't receive nearly enough attention from Lucasarts.

Exactly. They weren't making the games that earned them accolades anyway, and the people responsible for those games appear to most have left looking for greener pastures, anyway.

Good to see i'm not the only one that watched Pirates of the Caribbean and thought the idea was somewhat ripped off from Secret of Monkey Island!

It is a wierd decision, seeing as though Disney themselves have never released a decent game (that I know of) yet!

I can honestly say, that as much as I love Star Wars (more the original trilogy and continuation books), I never got into any of the games. BUT, I spent the best part of my youth playing Monkey Island and others of the LucasArts Adventure games...

I now live in hope that Disney might outsource these IPs to TellTale. They did a great job with Monkey Island and Sam & Max...let's have them do some more. It would be a blast to see another Maniac Mansion/DotT, or Zak McKraken!

In I may play devils advocate here....

Let's face it Lucasarts has been a shadow of its former self for quite some time. This company has been the shambling town drunk that use to be a bad ass lawman for quite some time. It's last great in house game was years ago, Prior to Knights of the Old Republic if I'm not mistaken. And as you've pointed out.

Sure you can say that they still had some potential left, but I think that's just wishful thinking Phil. They became nothing more then a Star Wars Licensing company in their twilight years, not really producing anything of there own anymore, apart from some sound stuff.

Hate to say it, but I think the outrage is just a the nostalgia of a bygone age, like Nintendo Power, or Saturday Morning Cartoons. What Disney did was a sound business decision in my book, like it or not. Now that said, I do have issue with them not giving their employees notice that they would be out of the job. No sir, that was not right, and I've been told happens WAY to often in this industry.

That's sort of how I feel, at first I was shocked when I heard the news, but after looking more into the reasoning behind the decision I started to become more understanding of it. Plus this doesn't really mean anything other then the loss of a brand, because Disney still retains all of the rights to the LucasArts properties, so the chances of us getting a new Monkey Island or a sequel to Zombies Ate My Neighbors are no less then they were before, in fact the chances might actually be greater now.

If they just looked at the games that have become classics and bestsellers now and try and to make something similar using their ips then lucasarts would have made an amazing comeback. Like a skyrim esque star wars game with a well written story, or a uncharted esgue indiana game (it's just like indiana jones anyway). Now though I only see stupid disney crossover games like that kingdom hearts. Or Disney jedi with mickey and goofy as jedi

PRoblem is that people live in the past when it came to LucasArts..

They have produced -nothing- the last years. last game they put out that was self made was in 2009.. and last.. decent game they put out was Republic commando in 2005.
The guys who gave us the great games of the 90s.. all the monkeybusiness.. and such are gone =/^

LucasArts have been just outsouceing everything anyways, so why keep a studio that does nothing?

Sad news maybe. But from a pure business stand point. What have the studio made the last 10 years that made a impact. Their glory days are gone. The people that brought us the Monkey Island games have not been with the studio for years. And the less said about Star Wars Kinect the better :XD:
So I understand why Disney closed the studio and I will let other (and more skilled)game studios work the IP's in the future. LucasArts where a great studio once, yes. But the truth is that some of the better Star Wars games that have come out on last gen and current, was not made by LucasArts.

Yeah, it was quite sad to read the news, I was shocked, and a touch disturbed. Disney still hasn't proved it can deliver a decent starwars film. now that's going to be their main avenue. worse yet, they'll be licensing. which means we're going to have the trolls under the bridge that are EA and their elk making always on DRM that you've got to break to be able to play

As a gamer I was heartbroken to see them go, but from a business side of things I see what they did. LucasArts hasn't produced anything that great in years, and while the new Battlefront game(First Assault i think) and 1313 looked amazing, they were still in early development with rumors of them being scrapped anyway. This way Disney has a chance to license out the IP to other game companies to develop new games, and hopefully pick up the two previously mentioned ones too.

as a very... hardcore gamer... (just drop by [link] to get an idea) ... I can't say I was upset by this news.

The hardcore gaming reality is that LucasArts has not made a good game on their own since Force Unleashed 5 years ago. If you take time to browse through Gamefaqs you'll find that the next previous big hit that was entirely a LucasArts game without any other outside studio involvement... was "Escape from Monkey Island" ... in 2001. That's it. Just 2 games in over 10 years developed internally that were certified critical and financial hits. ([link])

Disney closing LucasArts was just good business. In 2013 the LucasArts company was little more than a collection of managerial middlemen making continuity checks on franchise property. That era of LucasArts greatness ended years ago. The younger generation of gamers brought up on Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 see LucasArts as little more than a publisher who occasionally releases bad games of their own, kind of like Sega does.

Now, should Disney have kept the brand-name open and just fired all of the listed employees? That probably would have been a better option...

There's no real justification to just close down a company without considering the option to restructure it first. Sure you might lose money but LucasArts is a symbol more of a company. Been around for a long time and a lot of people grew up with LucasArts, so forgive me in thinking that suddenly closing down LucasArts would lead me to think it as stupid.

if u actually read the article ...they r not shutting down LucasArts, they did a bunch of lay offs ...streamlined the games to licensed only because of market risk....and most people have agreed that their most recent games weren't great but the fact remains it was a business decision by a company the has streamlined their own (ie...Disney's own games) .... its not the beginning of the end ....when Lucas sold it he had approved most of the decisions. Ask yourselves this, when was the last time LucasArts touched one of those "great" games from the past 20 years?

Now I am truly sad that Star Wars 1313 wont be seen till after 2015 ( after movie release) but the bottom line I haven't been disappointed by anything that Disney has done with their recent buyouts (ie...Marvel n Lucasfilm) ....
