Wildlife straying onto the roads isn't such a big problem here on fair Albion. We've killed most of it.
In other parts of the world, however, it's a continuing threat. Such as in Norway, where a man recently swerved to avoid a moose.....and hit a bear.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europ…

Y'see, city-folk: THIS is where you need bull-bars.

A little chickenwire over the windows wouldn't hurt, either.....

That's absolutely hilarious, if a bit scary and unfortunate for the man... And the bear..

Here in MN, we have an issue with literally RUNNING into deer when we go for a bike ride... True story..

I live in South Louisiana, 2 buddies of mine have totaled compact cars hitting deer. On both occasions the 2nd question i asked them, after "are you all right?" was "where's the deer?", visions of deer roast dancing in my head. First buddy answers, "in a ditch on the side of the road!", second one answers, "I know what you are thinking. i tried to leave with it, but i needed a ride back to my house more than i needed the deer. i traded it to the highway patrolmen that worked the accident for a lift!"

Honestly, City folk. We may not have elk or bears wild in the UK, but it only took a muntjac (The UK's smallest dear) to total my van's radiator and push it back in to several other breakable important bits. to cap it all ten minuets later the damn thing had the cheek to get up from the side of the road where I had moved it and stager out in to the middle of the road again for another try. I picked it up and moved it back to saftey where within half an hour of head butting my van to death it got up and ran off at full tilt as if nothing had happened. Some animals have no respect.

I live in South-western Norway, and I can't say I've had problems like this in the past. Most likely this happened further towards the mid-country where there's mostly forest and mountains.

It shouldn't, but that made me smirk. Sounds like Canada. Cept it would be, swerve to miss a beaver, then hit a deer, which then flew and smacked a goose.

Heh. I've seen way too many moose-car accidents. The moose rarely wins, but it's usually a draw with the car as well. It really sucks when a 1000 pound plus animal comes crashing through the windshield.

bull bars wont help if you hit a moose, nore does chicken wires on windows or bullet proof ones, best is to have a rollcage in the car or buy a car with reinforced roof pillars.

That's good luck he didnt hit the moose. Bear is fine.
The moose is still alive when you cream into their legs.
And they flail around in agony (watch the antlers)

Bears ain't that common in Norway so he got the worst of luck ever. Got very few of em'. But moose, deer, reindeer and/or sheep on the other hand...

And the animals that avoid getting hit by cars usually end up getting massacred by a nearby train -.- But then again, we have way too many herbivores contra carnivores. I blame the sheep farmers, who keep shooting wolves...

Kind of weird having a bear and moose in such close proximity. Moose tend to avoid bears, even though the latter isn't known for actively killing the former (bears tend to go more for the carcass, left behind by wolves and such), it could still happen that a desperate bear would go for a 700-800kg moose.

But the sheer luck(?) for missing a moose and hitting a bear, that hasn't even happened up here in Finland, where we have friggin' moose warning signs throughout most of it.

Y'know, I've been living in Norway these last 40 years (what with actually being born and raised as a Norwegian), and I've never once seen a bear in the wild. Plenty of moose, though. We do have plenty of wildlife fences along our roads, but, apparently, it often isn't enough.

The real problem with this is that the bear was not killed by the impact, but was enraged and wound up inside the automobile. With a sluggish and disoreinted driver. This ended well.

Thankfully, the driver got out before the bear could give him a piece of his mind. But now he has to get his car back from the bear mafia and they don't take too kindly to people who've hit them.

So we should all drive around at 5Mph? I've had moose jump out in front of me over highway guardrails. Also the problem with moose is their eyes shine just about as much as ours do in the dark. Now add the fact that moose are generally dark colored, with the occasional albino that doesn't make it to adulthood, with nothing shiny, you usually don't see them at night until they're bouncing over your hood.

I don't either, Alaska is a really big damn place. The bear was probably chasing the moose, or just starting it's charge. They're usually pretty good about not jumping out in front of cars. They usually will run from people unless you're between a sow and her cubs or walked into/onto their food. <-- The last is just plain yucky by the way.

Not long ago someone got killed near where I live by a rolling hay bale. It rolled down a sloped field, busted through a hedge and landed on their van whilst they were driving. Not quite relevant but still.
