People need to grow up, does an artists pic offend you? There's countless pages on the internet, go find something you like instead of bitching about this ONE page on a vast ocean of pages of things.
No one cares, and they shouldn't, because if you're offended over something then find a different page, and don't visit this one. Problem solved. The internet is a vast place with so many great/wonderful/awful/scary things to see, go find something you like instead of dwelling on something you don't.
I find it interesting that "Walkies" has garnered almost no reaction, even though it depicted some pretty outrageously offensive stuff, but one word has created this sh!t storm. But I guess Sheila Broflovski of Southpark, Colorado was right when she said, “…deplorable horrific violence is okay, as long as no one says any naughty words!”
Tis a shame, some people can't control their innate, brain washed, desire to control others but being offended. Till the day they lock me up, I'm going to continue offending people but not being one of the brain washed masses.
I honestly had no idea what the heck you were talking about because according to stereotypes, if anybody is going to be offended, since I'm a country bumpkin preacher (since 1996! and a political conservative to boot!) I should win the prize.
Now I normally don't go clicking on the censored pics, but I HAD to find out what was causing all the problems.
The word, "squaw"?
Good grief, but I've been publicly mocked and called things that would make your eardrums explode. This is nothing.
We move on AND I DEMAND TO BE OFFENDED BY MORE SCARLET PICS!
Nigger, dumbass, idiot, fucktard, retard, monkey boy, faggot, gay, jerk, asshole, punk, kid, dork, demon, stupid, beaner. These are all names I have been called through out my entire time in high school and college, and few more recent ones. Only one of these actually offends me when said to me. And I bet no one here can guess which one it is. All through out high jr high and high school I was made fun of and oppressed. I was treated like shit by everyone. Black people have no right to tell me I don't know what it is like to be pushed around and treated like crap for who I was. In fact, no minority can tell me I don't know what it is like to be the minority. I bet no one can tell from the list above I am actually white. Well, more tan then white, but still. I also was the kind of person that was nice to everyone, even the people who were rude to me. I also had my fair share of crushes on certain girls I was always to nervous to ask out. And I even tutored a lot of the people that bullied me to help them pass their classes.
If you want to get offended by words, especially when they are NOT directed at you, then first look at the ones that are. If you want to correct our use of words based off of what you believe is right, then first make sure you know the replacements. It you want to tell us we are wrong, make damn well sure you are right. And if you want to call me any of the names listed above, pray to your god that he will have mercy on your soul, because I wont. Thanks, and have a nice day.
P.S. Jollyjack, this comment isn't really meant towards you, just meant for all the people who are going through commenting as if they have the power of god to command everyone to stop saying things and what not. You are doing a great job as always, especially with finding the clip and what not. It was really a great use of comedy to make a point. Then again, comedy is one of the best ways to make any kind of point.
I had trouble trying to work out what had offended to begin with, then I found out which picture jollyjack was talking about...
Then I realised that some people can be really uptight about things.
Best thing to do: Don't see it as offensive. Some people may wish to use it as an offensive term or slur, but those people should be ignored by everyone, not just the people that find it offensive.
I could get easily get offended by all the stereotyping they put on people who wear glasses. They peg us as being giant smart arses, complete nerds and aren't physically attractive to anyone other than those who also wear glasses. Do I though? No. I just ignore it. Heck I sometimes find myself laughing at it.
Yes, if someone openly said that this was aimed at me personally, then I would have something to be offended about, but 99% of the time, it isn't.
On a related note: Kinda puts the whole 'Derpy being censored' thing in perspective.
This is why I no longer have a single fuck to give when it comes to anything internet related. Mainly because the opinions of anonymous people -- ones I'll most likely never meet, hold very little concern for me. I use to care in the past. Now, I find their rants to be quite amusing.
Love the image! If someone is offended they can just look away. Don’t ever stop. Your stuff is one of the main reasons I love Deviant Art. I don’t find this offensive in the slightest and I’m Irish / Niitsítapi (Blackfoot). Now there is an interesting mix. If you piss me off I’ll either beat you with my Shillelagh or scalp your ass! Somewhat politically incorrect I know what the hell.
It's true that 'PC' is a load of stifling bullshit, but there are still lines. Fuzzy, maybe, but they're there. You've done your research on the word in question, so you know what cultural weight it carries. Considering that, would you title a piece 'Buxom N*gger'?
Consider that, would you all mind the title "buxom n*gger" if you find among his photo one in which he is in africa helping children? that's it.. words are nothing! Actions are everything. The value of a word is what you want to understand, your past and your culture. You don't like a joke? you can express your opinion.. but this one, people is a trial. Stop being conformist and start think!
Words are, in fact, actions. They are the action which created and defines civilization, and which sets us apart from a troop of chimpanzees. Belittle the importance of words at your peril.
Words express ideas and opinions. Using a loaded word is like breaking a traffic law; maybe you did it out of ignorance, maybe you did it out of impatience, maybe you did it to be 'non-conformist,' but the result of swerving into oncoming traffic is no different in these cases than if it was done out of malice. That's why we have to earn a license to drive a car; to prove that we are able and willing to adhere to applicable laws. There is no license required to speak, but responsibility is implicit with power. There are things which you can say, but probably shouldn't if you don't want to cause a wreck.
Now, if I were to agree with you because you told me not to be a conformist, what would I be? Rather than being a special snowflake like everyone else, I prefer to just be myself. Have you considered the possibility that non-conformist opinions might not all line up neatly into a package which conforms with your views? That perhaps others have thought longer and harder about many things than you give them credit for? Society need not reach consensus out of conformism; if a reasonable line of thinking regarding a subject tends to prevail, then general consensus may be reached through independent thought. That's why it's usually possible for one culture to meet another without literally eating it.
I don't understand how this is a "trial." It appears to me to be a case of an artist getting caught with his hand in the cultural cookie jar, and attempting to save face by expounding upon his right to eat cookies. And maybe he's right, but it isn't very thoughtful towards others.
nothing to say against your words.. you wrote beautiful things and most of it I truly agree with! What I'm just saying is that he didn't say white people are better then black or yellow, or that the genocide of natives was a right thing to do.. these are words that none should be permitted to say and are equal to take actions. I'm just saying that it was a f***ing hilarious/sexy/comic image that had nothing to do with racism and with a single word that meant nothing and was put there just in oder to be funny. And if you don't understand the difference between people with dangerous intentions and people just working to gift a laugh to others this world has serious problems!!
I never believed that Jollyjack was acting in a malicious manner. Perhaps I was unclear on that. Nor did I find anything particularly offensive about the uploaded image, though I could see it ruffling a few feathers - no pun intended. I just found it a bit ironic that he took offence at people being offended by one of history's nastiest slurs, and I wanted to address why comedians are not necessarily omniscient gurus of lucidity. There are no crisp lines in reality - that's a human invention.
Once upon a time in an Indian village, there lived three squaws. Two squaws had young sons who were very overweight. The first squaw, whose son weighed 150 pounds, always placed her son on a bear hide near a pine grove; the second squaw, whose son also weighed 150 pounds, put her son on a moose hide in the shade of a large oak tree; but the third squaw, who was expecting the birth of her first son, always rested on a hippopotamus hide beside a bubbling brook. Her weight? 300 pounds!
To this day, mathematicians give credit to these women and their children for proving the Pythagorean Theorem, because you see: The squaw of the hippopotamus is equal to the sons of the squaws of the other two hides.
Nothing like a corny pun to defuse the tension that happens when someone cries racism
Bah! I hate it when people get upset over a word. words are just our way of voicing ideas, and while it may hold a racist connotation to YOU , that doesn't mean that someone else using it is racist. There was no intent to be racist here, how can you accuse someone of racism just because YOU attach a specific connotation to a word when that wasn't the intent of the person using it?
I'm not english so I don't know if my word will be the right ones and if anybody will read this, but I really have to write this!I really don't understand people being offended by words.. I mean.. I feel so many times disgusted and offended by my race, humans, in what we did, we are doing and will do, I got offended by slavery, by religious oppression and by oppression of religions, by wars, those caused by money and those caused by "right valors", by treating a person differently because we feel it's different, by money ruling the society, by society that let the money ruling itself, by the destruction of nature and I could go on... But really I don't understand how can you feel offendef by words.. I can have an afro-american friend, call him *** and be the most important person for him, I can be hebrew and laugh when I see certain demotivationals, that does not means anything!! actions are what make this world the worst ever, not words. Sometimes words are followed by actions, but most of times words are just mislead, because we are 7 billions people here guys, each one with different stories, lifes and brain. Stop getting offended by words, start take actions when you see other's actions ruining this world!
