That's right; i'm one of the few artists here on DA that seems content with my name. That; and I think changing a "brand" simply because you can, after you've spent time and energy building up an audience is f**king stupid.
I've been here for years. I've operated on the internet under "jollyjack" for longer. If I changed that now it would be monumentally confusing to people that follow my work, which, in turn, would have an effect on revenue.
There are a ton of artists here whose work I keenly follow, and I think they're kinda shooting themselves in the foot by doing this.

Japan Journal....day one, 11/11/11Time is certainly displaced. We're not really suffering jet lag but it's obvious our bodies are weirded out by being here.
My girlfriend and I traveled today to Atsugi, about an hour train ride from Tokyo. We had some business to take care of there. It was a bit frustrating because we couldn't get everything done we needed to, but the traveling to and from was delightful.
I was amazed, looking out the train window, there was not ONE piece of litter. I think we traveled 20 miles or more before I saw so much as a tissue paper beside the tracks. The Japanese, even in the less affluent areas, are incredibly tidy.
During the morning commute, the subway trains are packed so full there are literally uniformed individuals called "pushers" whose job it is to shove people into the cars as tightly as possible. As the doors slide shut they get very aggressive and carry out their job of sardine commuter packing very seriously… and they do it with smiles and white gloves and a charm that everyo

The AvengersYou know that giddy, gleeful feeling that renders you incapable of doing little more than giggle like a lunatic?
I pretty much had that from start to finish during the Avengers film (Which was released on Fair Blighty's shores as "Avengers Assemble" thanks to the past efforts of Steed and Peel).
There have only been a handful of movies that invoked that kind of response in me: Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, Abram's Star Trek, Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes and the first Iron Man film are those which immediately spring to mind.
Indeed; Avengers is THE best Marvel movie since Iron Man. Ace cast, brilliant story, hysterical script, a scene that will stab anyone that's followed the films leading up to this point right through the heart and a fair few more surprises.
Chief among them being; how the hell did the Hulk become such a f**king awesome character after so many naff films?
I'm gonna go see this one again!
Today, I am HeartbrokenThis past week our nation witnessed one of the most horrific violations in history. A beast that I refuse to name, planned and then killed 12 people in a theatre in Colorado. I won't go into details of how, why, or who committed this atrocity.
What I WILL address is the idea of our Constitutional "right to bear arms". The misconstrued perception of this "right", saddens and confuses me. The archaic belief that having a gun in our houses will enable us to "defend ourselves" is not only statistically improbable, it is metaphorically AND literally unsettling to those who live with us. A loaded gun in a house says,"I don't trust people", "I am afraid someone will break in and hurt us", and also "I am willing to shoot to kill another human being".
If you have a gun in your house and it is NOT loaded, the statistical probability of you being able to get to it, load it, and confront a home invader AND for the outcome of that confrontation to be positive in ANY way, is insignificantly small.

Everything is Beautiful...NOT!In the 1960s, Ray Stevens wrote a song titled "Everything Is Beautiful" and it won him a grammy. Perhaps it was the idealism of those times or maybe a personal philosophy that gave birth to this song. It starts out with children singing "Jesus Loves the Little Children", a song I remember singing in church when I was a child.
"Jesus loves the little children
All the children of the world
Red and yellow, black and white
They are precious in His sight
Jesus loves the little children of the world"
Like Disney's "It's a Small World", this song has a worm like infectious tune that rolls around in your brain like a marble in a barrel. A child, once he has learned this song, will hum it, whistle it, and sing it until adult ears bleed. Not only is the tune contagious, the lyrics are ideal and Pollyanna to the point of near myopic blindness.
After one chorus of "Jesus Loves the Little Children", Mr. Stevens' song moves into his "Everything Is Beautiful, in It's Own Way" mantra.

World War 3 may just be months away, with much of the middle east currently being blown apart by missiles and the locals setting their neighbours on fire, but the real news is that the Twinkie, the USA's primary contribution to world cuisine, could cease to be.
"You eat those?" I hear people ask. Hell no. Never eaten one in my life. There's something about their unnatural, chemical-yellow colour and that they have a half-life rather than a use-by date that just sets off one too many alarm-bells.
In fact, I'm pretty sure that if you read the print on the pack, you'll find asbestos to be a key ingredient.
Even John McClane can't keep one down, and he took out a building full of terrorists with nothing but his bare feet and a Santa hat.
Which leads to my point: Without the Twinkie, there are SO many lines from SO many classic movies that future generations just a
Olympic Fire and IndustryWell; the opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympics certainly was….surprising.
As I predicted; there was quite a bit of content that just had me squirming in my chair, thinking "No! NO! Why did you do that?!". The absurdity of the nod to the NHS, for example, and the sudden appearance of various storybook villains, which felt (for lack of a better word) "Disney".
However; the "historical" section of the ceremony's opening half utterly blew me away. An unexpected appearance by Kenneth Branagh, playing Isambard Kingdom Brunel (who essentially WAS the Industrial Revolution), began a spectacular sequence that pretty much summed up what Britain's past was all about; fire and industry.
It was, without a doubt, the highlight of the entire spectacle, and if you either didn't get the chance to catch it or didn't bother to watch it, I urge you to track it down online!

Without the extra day every 4 years, we would be in 2013.
As the Mayan Calendar doesn't take leap years into account; 2012 has been and gone.

Look, Ma! I can do's tracing!When I was a kid, I used to trace cartoons and comics.
All kids that want to draw in a particular style that they find appealing.
It's a thing most people grow out of, as they A) learn that it does nothing to improve your own skills and B) you can't actually do anything with the "art" because it's still someone else's work.
I say most people.

I doubt he's the only one on DA doing this, and I have a special hatred for such vermin, so if you're aware of anyone else that is both copying other people's work AND trying to sell prints of the results without authorisation from the original artist - reply here with a link.
"Legend of Korra" Series Review:...............................woah.

Well; that was rather good, wasn't it?
Splendid art, voice acting and a compelling narrative on par with any live-action, prime-time series.
The resolution at the end, though, felt a little rushed. While I'm glad there was one, it had an air of finality about it, as though it's uncertain a second season will ever transpire.
If there isn't one; it'll be a crime, given all the work that went into crafting Korra's world.
Evil Dead RemakeIf an original film has a splendid core concept, but a budget too low or a director too inept to do it justice, I don't mind a remake. I'll applaud it.
The most toxic remake thus far has been "Total Recall", which was terrible simply because it used the original as a crutch at more than a few points and, despite having a massive budget and 20 years of technological advancement on the original: felt less exciting and epic.
Closer to the book, sure, but just not as much fun.
And now they've turned their gaze upon "Evil Dead".
Now, I'm not going to try and defend the original Evil Dead, because it's not actually that great a film. This is proven with "Evil Dead 2", in which the entirety of the preceding movie's plot and purpose is successfully reduced to an opening act. Something that wouldn't have been possible were the movie, y'know; good.

I don't mind people voicing that they don't like my work or the content of my silly little cartoons. Most of the time I find it funny! But what really grates is when the individual doesn't have the spine to do so via their day-to-day DA profile.
They set up a new one. One which they use to rattle off whatever flatulance they believe passes as worthwhile commentary in the real world, most likely in the wake of mummy and daddy slapping them on the wrist over something  - angsty, juvenile pricks that they are.
And juvenile they must be, as anyone with a mite more experience would realise that any weight you hope your words might have is completely lost when someone visits your "slander" profile and reads the numbers "0 Deviations", "0 Favourites", "0 Watchers", "No Journal entries", etc.
It renders your words as vacuous as your gallery.
So if you're going to type stuff like "I feel like some of the smut you draw takes away from the credibility of your art as a whole." or "So much smutty trash it's hard to notice the decent works you have." (2 comments on 2 different DA galleries, both lines from the same cretin), you'd better be able to back up your "Holier-than-thou" attitude, otherwise you're just littering.....you monumental twat.

I'm seriously tempted to call in a favor and get a couple of reasonably-proficient artists to critique your, uh, work, just to see where you'll move the goalposts next.

I think this what you said is great, I would never put down your work. It is great, all of it in one fashion or another. Although I know my opinion in the great scheme of things isn't worth a hill of beans!

Sadly, a lot of folks do that, as you've noticed... My only way to avoid such crap is to keep anything naughty on a completely separate account. though honestly I haven't added anything to my DA account in a while...
