That's right. I'm changing my DA name.
I've thought long and hard and have decided to change it toooooo.......
That's right; i'm one of the few artists here on DA that seems content with my name. That; and I think changing a "brand" simply because you can, after you've spent time and energy building up an audience is f**king stupid.
I've been here for years. I've operated on the internet under "jollyjack" for longer. If I changed that now it would be monumentally confusing to people that follow my work, which, in turn, would have an effect on revenue.
There are a ton of artists here whose work I keenly follow, and I think they're kinda shooting themselves in the foot by doing this.

Kinda reminds be of those little label-making things everyone's been given on at least one Christmas as a kid: you unwrap it, you find out what it does and you spend the rest of the day punching out new tags for everything. Even if they're not needed.

What is your impression on those people who constantly change their ID avatar on a weekly basis?
Randimaxis Featured By Owner Apr 10, 2013  Hobbyist General Artist
I happen to have a name that, after searching the Internets, has NO CONNECTIONS to anyone or anything else! I have achieved originality in a world that has seen everything before... multiple times. EXCELSIOR!

By the way, I agree - why change one's name when it's that name that people identify you & your work with?
2012ReapeR Featured By Owner Jun 7, 2012  Student Digital Artist
right you are there,
dA name is the same as a brand, changing it is almost as starting all over

I think we all know the reason for my username. It's where I live and work and play, etc... I don't ever plan on leaving, so...

here,here: well spoken, bruce.
presumably , users actually thought about their user-name [well, i didn't much , i'll admit, but didn't care either...] , while signing up. if not, then here , for a price, is your second chance from such short-sightedness.

i also will not be changing my user-name. and i'm astounded at the number of people i watch who did............... :O

I actually know artists based on their art, not their name. I've always been kinda terrible with names, but art is always recognizable. That's one reason why I like DA so much. I see a particular piece in my in box and say "Woo! it's been a while since they posted something here! Let's see what they have to say about it." So, come what may, I'll still watch for their art, not their name.
ProjectZuel Featured By Owner May 24, 2012  Hobbyist Digital Artist
Some people changing there name makes sense such as them wanting to use their real name or their name just plain sucks but a large number of people I watch just seem to have changed their names for the hell of it. It's annoying...

if you change the brand you'd have to make a new logo as well on your art

I agree with you wholeheartedly. I, however, don't have any following as such and am thinking about changing my name to something more internationally pronouncable.

I think you should change from "jollyjack" to "JollyJack". I think the Help Desk could help you change your name if there's any problem. :P

Thank you.
That is all.
WickedPrince Featured By Owner May 20, 2012
I agree. I have a few hundred artists I'm watching and about twenty decided to change their name. Pure idiocy. Now it will take me months if not longer to figure out who the heck these people are when I see new material in my in-box.
Desuno Featured By Owner May 20, 2012
I've been thinking of changing my name because I created this profile back when I was in middle school... I'm in college now... And while this name was good at the time my identity as an artist has changed drastically. the only problem is that as far as I am aware, the only way to "change" your name on DA is to make a whole new account altogether. I'd rather not have to go through all that trouble if it means risking the loss of the handful of followers I have.

If anyone on has any information on name changing in DA at all, please let me know with a response.
Desuno Featured By Owner May 20, 2012
Another reason I want to change my name is because apparently there is an anime character with the same name as mine, and I would like to stop being barraged by people asking me if I'm a fanboy.
Elvenwyn Featured By Owner May 20, 2012  Student Digital Artist
I completely agree with you, there are some really cool artists here on DA that I follow and I've always known them by their original name and now they've changed it to something completely different causing me to think who was who. However I am excluding two artists because I know their real names and they changed their DA names to their real names.
forbiddenhero Featured By Owner May 20, 2012  Student Writer
I thought about changing my name, since nobody really cares about me on here, and the my name seems a bit narcissistic, but that would mean getting rid of my icon. Sad to say, but I don't feel like changing my name is worth losing an icon that was made for me. Even though I rarely talk about the character who shares the icon with me, it's still a part of who I am on here. Same with my name. I just don't feel like a hero, and I'm know as something else on other sites. I agree that being able to change your name on here just because you can is silly, but there are others who have good reasons for changing their name. Some of them want change it from "username" to "UserName" or it could be a personal reason to someone. Not everyone is doing it just to do it, but many are, which is sad. As for me, like I said, I'm not changing it, because my icon is more important than my username.

I agree with you. I won't be changing my name any time soon either. I tend to like my na,e, otherwise I wouldn't have picked it in the first place. :)

I agree on some of what you said, however not everyone is at your lvl of popularity.
For you, yea I agree; changing your name would be a horrible idea.
For someone like me, who is stuck with a horrible fandom name from 7 years ago?
One that I out grew years ago?
I've not built myself up much yet, don't have a lot of fans or anything I'm well known for on DA.
I've changed what I go by now and DA is the only one I still have the same only because, up till now I've had no other real chose.
It just confuses people that my DA is compleatly different then my YT and Twiter and thats just as bad.
For me its a rather smart ophon, now I just need to upgrade again. ; p

Nearly had me there. Like the rest, I'm glad you're not changing your name. As you said, it's too iconic and it would be too confusing otherwise.

I can understand where you're coming from towards that when.. it comes to artists who make a profit on here.

But then there are those people who, like myself, feel they've outgrown their DA name who tend to do art as more of a hobby than for hobby-and-profit.

It's all completely based on the individual. But for you, Jack, you're right. The name change would not benefit you in any way. I happened to delete my old account and start a new one just a couple of month ago to make it more professional and because I didn't have a big fanbase anyway. Because of that, though, I don't need the name change either haha. Who knows...maybe it will come in handy in the future.

True, but I'm a nothing in the dA world, with a small devoted group of watchers and the name I had originally for my other dA account has not aged well, so I changed it to my Tumblr name, to continue the trademark, as you say. I'm glad you're leaving yours as is, because I've always known you as JJ here and on b2ta, so bravo! :)

CrabOfDoom Featured By Owner May 19, 2012  Hobbyist Digital Artist
JollyJack is too simple and memorable to give up, if you ask me. Ad execs can go their whole careers without ever coming up with something so catchy.

As far as I've seen from the artists I watch, a lot of those who've changed their names started their dAs with names like NarutoLuvr69 or NicknameRandomJapaneseWord and are glad to not have to die of embarrassment when giving out links to their galleries anymore. To that end, I can understand, but I like my screen name, I use it everywhere else in the virtual world, and see no need to change it.

Truth. I changed my name before I started trying to establish a brand, because airpig was more marketable than aarpie was (and people kept asking me if I was affiliated with AARP :P). But the folks that have a massive following and then BOOM, decide to change? Insane!
RA-Meenan Featured By Owner May 18, 2012  Hobbyist Digital Artist
I agree. I hate it when I see "I'm moving to a new account! <3" All I can think is, "after all the time and energy you put into the one you already have?"

So stupid.
