I keep thinking that it’s amazing there are still lost treasures in the world, but I really shouldn’t. Human civilization, when it’s not being neglectful or forgetful, has a tendency to shoot first and ask questions later, leading to things being misplaced indefinitely. If an ancient hoard is found, it was not buried with the intent of it being hidden long term. It only remained there because everyone who knew about it ended up dead.
Take the Staffordshire Hoard, discovered in a field in 2009. This was an Anglo-Saxon trove that contained what archaeologists and academics generally refer to as a “sh*t-ton” of gold. It was most likely buried while the owners were on the run from someone, with said owners either being killed or unable to return, not because a hole in the ground was considered a bank in ancient times.
Being on the lam, you ditch what’s slowing you down, especially if what you’re carrying will give your pursuers more reason to beat the crap out of you. Which brings us to Ze Nazis.
More and more of the lucre plundered by the Third Reich is turning up thanks to modern tech. At the end of the war, they were hurriedly secreting it around Europe as armies from several pissed off nations closed in.

Turfing crates into lakes was a popular SS pastime in 1944.

Ground penetrating radar may have turned up something new, near the city of Walbrzych in south-west Poland: a buried train.
There are local legends about an armoured Nazi train, loaded with valuables, which went missing in the closing years of the conflict, and an apparent death-bed confession of one involved in its hiding led a pair of unidentified treasure hunters to the area.
The radar images apparently show a train with gun turrets, we can assume sealed up in a forgotten tunnel.
Through lawyers, the treasure hunters have been discussing the matter with the German and Polish authorities, mostly to negotiate their cut of anything found.
Though the site has not been disclosed, the Polish Deputy Culture Minister has warned the public about potential dangers that may be present. The tunnel could be booby trapped. The train might be carrying now-unstable bombs or chemicals. Maybe even Nazi zombies!
It is an exciting thought (the loot, not the zombies). Quite a few famous treasures are unaccounted for, such as the famed Amber Room. If anything like that is on board, this story and the people who found the train will become legends!

It's pretty cool...there's probably some stuff in there that was stolen from families and can be returned to them or their descendants.

Also there are thousands of undiscovered shipwrecks out there for treasure hunters to find.

While it is terrible that the Nazis did what they did and that's how this train ended up buried the process of rediscovering lost things is pretty cool.

The thing I love most about this story is that the treasure seekers are going to the law and getting permission, it's not idiots doing this job.

Actually... I'll sit back and wait for some one to use this in a plot for  'B' grade sci-fi/horror movie.

One disused train tunnel... Some old box cars.... lots of sheet metal and grey paint... Yeah, totally going to happen. :P

A lot of people have claimed the polish government's warning of possible dangers while excavating is in truth the just wanting it all for themselves but I can't help but feel that is just borderline conspiracy theory.

If anything, nazis were very much well known for booby-trapping the shit out of everything late in the war, in attempts to delay the advances of their opponent.

In my eyes, something like that is not simply "maybe" booby-trapped, but very -likely- to be. If it exists that is.

As far as so called treasure goes I feel there r always good reasons it goes from owner to owner and it's never good but that's just me.
O well I'm sure we all can see how the universe tends to sort it's self out lol.:happybounce:

I for one would be tickled if it were the Amber Room, since that's a lost wonder.  I find it much less interesting if it's full of plundered concentration camp gold fillings and stolen rings.  Gold is only gold, and the argument over ownership isn't going to do anything but cause problems.

It might be, the location is not a coincidence, its close to what at the time was the Soviet Border. Not to mention that whole region was under Russian control at one point. They night have viewed moving the train pointless, sealed the tunnel. And hoped that the next Reich would receive it....and who knows, maybe it has a Zombie Hitler?

if it is the lost train it would be incredible. I just saw the monument's men this week and which is a fairly descent movie. and I did not realize that the Nazi hid things in mines like they showed in the movie I knew they stole many art pieces and destroyed many. but the fact of how they hid so many baffled me and I hope many more become recovered from the train if it is the lost train.

On one hand, it would be nice if there weren't so many LOST treasures. On the other hand, it's a unique experience that will likely be dead within the next hundred years, since by then, it's likely we'll have found all the treasure. Kind of a sobering thought, but hey.

When you have two nations vying for control, things will not go well for the treasure hunters.  One or both countries will end up saying, "Ours!  Now go away, meddler!" and that will be the end of their cut.  Historically, with sunken treasure and the like, the politics gets ugly while the hoard is recovered, just in time to turn it over to the "Authorities."

Just about all of the Nazi treasure was property taken from somebody else, usually Jews or conquered nations.  I could see an argument for any recovered gold being property of Poland, but I don't see any reason Germany should have any claim to such ill-gotten goods.

Yes, it will be an archaeological treasure, too.  I hope they explore, not plunder.

Lastly, jack, the thought of Nazis experiments bringing on the Zombie Apocalypse intrigues me.  Pictures!  We want pictures!

although, they think they found FDR's secret train recently. no stash of wheelchairs on board, however.
