I’ve had a few people asking me about Yooka-Laylee, the first game from Playtonic, a tiny developer made up of ex-Rare staff.
I’m guessing people are bugging me about it because I was a concept artist on the least popular of the Banjo Kazooie games, a series to which Yooka-Laylee is the spiritual successor.
Aside from having worked with some of the Playtonic staff during my stint at Rare, I have no connection to the title, nor any inside information about it.
My general opinion of it is: it’s a piece of epic trolling!
With the symbiotic characters, the art style, the googly eyes, even the colour scheme of their logo; the Playtonic guys are basically sticking their finger up at Microsoft and saying “This is what we wanted to be making, not that Kinnect shite you forced us to work on”.
I like that.
I like that a lot.
Best of luck to them!

We're sorry that you hate money microsoft.  Maybe if you had let us create something like what we're creating now, maybe you could have actually made some money.

Something like that?

ok, I know you have copious amounts of free time on your hands. But I thought I would ask if you would mind taking a look at my game, One my (very small) company made. It is called "Star Sabotage 2" You can find it for either the android phone, (through google play) or on the app store for IOS, (whichever you have access too) We also have it on Playstation Vita (via the playstation mobile network) as well as playstation TV.

If you feel like it, take a look at it. I will warn you that both the shield and the stars can be assholes at times. they like to go sideways....

Thanks for any input you may have on it. It's our first game, (even though it is number 2, the first one sucked, so we did not release it) Please tell me what you think.

Huh yes, the parallels to Banjo-Kazooie are dead obvious. Best of luck to Playtonic from me, and may their free spirits be safe from the creativity-munching AAA industry as long as possible =)

And NOW it's cleared over a million dollars, assuring that they will meet every single one of their stretch goals.

They did this in a DAY.  I'd say this hopefully tells the gaming industry something, but it's probably not going to be acknowledged.

Yeah, Microsoft REALLY squandered the gold mine they had with Rare.
But that might be changing with the next few years. We can only hope.

They're more likely to just close it down. That tends to be what happens to developers that get bought by big companies: all the staff that made them great leave, the quality of their products drops and then the studio is remaned and absorbed into the mass of the parent company or closed down entirely.

Well, there seems to have hit a bit of a nerve amongst gamers, given that it met it's Kickstarter goal in 45 MINUTES!

Less than an HOUR, and the game met it's goal.  Now it's onto stretch goals, to which- as of this posting- they've already cleared FIVE.

And they still have 46 days to go.

Yeah I hated Nuts and Bolts but nothing wrong with the art-design, sadly didn't carry over to much else.

Must of been pretty harsh working for a company that was capable of great things and being told to work on something you have no interest in or been given less controls to work with just cause a bigger company says so

DAMN!

Not even an hour after the kickstarter launched, already pushing $80,000 in "funds"
of their $270,000 goal.

www.kickstarter.com/projects/p…

Think Yooka-Laylee could easily pass a mill in a week.

EDIT:
Only took 40 mins, it's now fully funded at $275,000

Ex-Employees going off on their own and then poking their bosses in the eye seems to be happening allot lately in gaming and i love it too. I cant wait to see more of this and i may even donate, depending on if console versions are going to be a thing, i know they want it to be a thing.

On a side note, Nuts and Bolts wasn't horrible, though i can understand people not liking it, I personally enjoyed experimenting with making different air crafts, flying them as high as I could and then exploding them ^-^

I liked Nuts & Bolts, personally. I know it's not what many people wanted from Banjo-Kazooie on the Xbox (I'm sure they wanted a Rare branded Mario killer, not Wacky Races Meets LEGOs), but I had a lot of fun MacGyvering up solutions to missions and generally messing around with the vehicle physics. It's a pity the game didn't do well.

Anyway, it's nice to see some of the old Rare crew working on a new platformer project. I wish 'em the best of luck on that.

Even as a poor entry in the series, Nuts and Bolts was indeed pretty fun to play with. The gameplay was solid if a bit clunky, the graphics were golden, and the character and environment designs were simply awesome (nod to Jolly on that one). Too bad it wasn't the game fans expected...
