Skyrim - First ImpressionsPicked up a cheapo copy of Skyrim today. First impressions: this game is so inside the box, it's inside a smaller box.Tolkien was, undeniably, a genius, but, for the love of creativity and dynamism; read another f**king book, people. There's a world of culture, history and myth out there to seek inspiration from! Fantasy should be an exciting, twisted reflection of the world around us, not an endless stream of pirated Lord of the Rings DVDs.
Cute Ad.A recent ad for Lynx makes me want to draw wings and halos:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3C7-v_R-r94The product may carry the "cheap, teenage smell of desperation", but that naïve angel is damn cute "Lynx" is known as "Axe" in some regions. Not quite sure why.Say the word "Lynx" and it conjures imagery of lithe, feline predators. What springs to mind when you say "Axe"?Lumberjacks. .and murder.
The Word of KurtzI was checking the "links" section of my website, just to make sure everything was still working as I hadn't actually clicked on anything there for a while, and I found myself on the PVP website."A while" was obviously "a few years". I barely recognised the strip!Anyway; I'm not writing this to bitch about hating change (I'll save that and put it into Sequential Art), I'm writing this to relay a very good point the good Mr Kurtz made in the PVP blog:"Everyone is kind of freaking out right now because of the Gary Friedrich case. Long story short, the guy who created Ghost Rider in 1972 sued Marvel, claiming that they never filed a copyright for his work and therefore he still owns Ghost Rider. Courts said "sit down before you fall down" and in addition slapped the guy with a $17,000 fine for selling tee shirts and posters featuring Mike Ploog Ghost Rider art at conventions.People are considering this a warning salvo at artists who do sketches of Marvel and DC owned characters at
The Queen gets herself a Death RayOK - not really, but as part of her upcoming Diamond Jubilee, ERII is to fire an uber-laser from Buckingham Palace, which is awesome, but does make us look just an itty bit more.... evil.http://nla.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/4125344/Queen-to-fire-huge-Mall-laser.htmlI mean; our crisis response committee is called COBRA, our military satellite network is called SKYNET and now the palace has been equipped with a great big f**k-off laser cannon. You'd think we were a nation of super-villains.
Turtles Production Shut DownVICTORY!http://uk.ign.com/articles/2012/06/15/ninja-turtles-shut-downParamount has shut down pre-production on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot over "script problems".Translation; Paramount realised that if they continued down the path Bay was going, fans would probably burn their studios to the ground. With luck (and a dollop of common sense) the project will be shelved altogether and the IP left fallow until competent directors/producers are brought on board.I'm going to pretend my little campaign helped with this
Tip of the Day: Getting your foot in the door*Take note that this advice is meant for people that are completely unknown beginners that have no options and are looking to learn***Comic legend Lynn Johnston (creator of "For Better or For Worse" gave me today's tip of the day. She wrote to me with some advice after listening to my audiobook "The Perfect Bait""I wondered if there should be a portion dedicated to people- students etc who are completely unknown, who just want to get a foot in the door.Working for free is the answer. You might balk at this because some critics say this gives the appearance that there is NO value to skill and talent. However- consider this: Working for free gives you amazing experience. It allows you to practice on someone else's project, see your work in print, establish a reputation and learn- big time. People who won't work for free WILL pay for a course! What better learning experience is there than to work with a client- such as a library or an independent book store or a school- producing poste
Doomsday....sorry; you missed it.Since the concept of the Leap Year was first implemented back in 45BC, there have been about 514 of them.Without the extra day every 4 years, we would be in 2013.As the Mayan Calendar doesn't take leap years into account; 2012 has been and gone.(Edit - no: I'm not smart enough to work that out myself. I read it!)
John K said something like...Stagnation in drawing can be cured by un-stagnating. IE: Drawing differently.Simple, right?I think we've been trained by boring autistic-type art people who work in children's animation and mainstream comics and BORING FANTASY ART, and HEY MAN IM A STEAMPUNK/SPACE ARTIST, and ANIME and ARGH!!!... to have expectations that our art should be this eternal monolith of consistency, and branding ourselves means specializing to a fault and never ever escaping from that specialty. Also, we tend to tie our pride and workmanship to our art. So giving up something people recognize, probably seems counter-intuitive.But like, if attempt to draw in a new way, the new approach will always give you perspective on your old approach. Once you've exhausted every possible approach on a style or mode of thought, finding something new and exciting in that world you've mastered becomes like a test of faith. You're essentially waiting for a bolt of inspiration from another plane
Tip of the DayWhat motivates you to create art? Now think about how you can use this very important information.Sending positive vibes to you all!Bobby
I Was Laid Off One Year Ago: Part 5[Click Here For Part 4]_____________________What Came First...?A couple years back, our publisher's CEO made a splash in the video gaming blogs and news sites by saying that we upheld our jobs with dignified sincerity, and that we knew the process of making fun and games was anything but fun and games. Of course, considering the hilarious level of integrity professional video gaming blogs adhere to (hilarious!), you could imagine those words were twisted around to single out one phrase. Take out all the previous context, and what's left? "We take the fun out of making video games."Eeeeesh.Might as well conclude that Fukishima just started glowing in the dark one morning, St. Elsewhere is a documentary about autism, or JFK was killed by quite a powerful migraine. The safest course of action when offered an interview by a gaming blog is to s
I Was Laid Off One Year Ago: Part 3[Click Here For Part 2]_____________________This AgainShe looked down at her plate, an empty glare fixated on her slowly cooling potatoes. The dinner could have been going better.August, 2010, the last weekend before overtime started on our major AAA project. I was transferred from the previous rhythm/music video game onto the major blockbuster shooter just a month prior to their major crunch period. We were literally jumping from our last crunch into a new one with hardly any break. Though the timing made things a bit hectic, I soon learned it certainly was convenient. The news had already traveled the pipeline. I didn't just depart from that last company; I was chased by an exploding fireball out the front door, diving for safety. The layoff's hit just minutes after I finalized the paperwork for the parkin
Skyrim? Been there. Bought the T-Shirt.Bethesda (when they're not acting like prats about someone daring to use the word "Scrolls" in a title) produced one of my all time favourite games: Fallout 3.It sits atop my list of Desert Island Discs because the Capital Wasteland is simply one of the most engaging virtual environments thus far created, and within which; exploration is rewarded. Very few games actually let you do what you want. They claim to, but in actual fact; just lead you 'round by the nose or provide you "hints" that both insult your intelligence and ruin the atmosphere.Fallout 3 leaves you alone to enjoy its irradiated wonderland at your leisure. Uncovering the mythology for yourself by sifting through the remains of the obliterated DC area. You'd think then, with my obvious love of such games, that I would have picked up a copy of Skyrim. Maybe even two. One to play and one to caress gently during the loading screens.Well; no. I haven't, and won't for some time.Skyrim just doesn't blow my skirt up, for the
Tracing.Tracing, a very sensitive topic for a lot of artists, Greg Manchess talks on Muddy Colors about his experiences and I support 300% all he wrote, check it out!http://muddycolors.blogspot.ro/2012/07/10-things-i-rememberabout-tracing.html
Traditional art.Someone has asked me: 'what do you prefer? Why don't you try a digital art?'Well ... I will not! Why? I just love traditional art. Touching the pen / brush, etc., many errors, of which only some can be clean by eraser. Magic!Be honest - I have nothing against the artists or works made in a digital way. They are very impressive, colorful - almost perfect! I admire them for it!My drawing teacher said: 'Maybe just a little while and the people who use a pencil / brush - will be no exist - you will only count them on one hand. Do not go away from the traditional art because it all begins from traditional...' . There's a lot of truth. No matter what you do - do what you like the most! And most important: be good at it!What is your opinion? ^^LADY2
I Was Laid Off One Year Ago: Part 8[Click here for Part 7]_____________________TimeEasy mistake."This doesn't look any different from the last game!"People make it all the time."They made, like, a jillion dollars last year, why isn't it the best looking game ever made?:Misconceptions..."I heard it uses the Quake engine, talk about outdated, why don't they move on to something new?"...Ignorance..."They have the money, why don't they go for something bigger?"...Cynicism."The only repackaged things I ever buy are Hot Pockets."Okay, that last one was pretty funny.Against the better recommendation of overlords, leads, and general common sense, I took a moment to crack open the work PC to take a gander upon the comments people were making on the trailer for our AAA shooter title. When humanity looks into the past and reflects upon the worst inventions we've ever developed, the list may com
